Closet Staples
Sunday, November 6th, 2011 | 40 Comments
I wrote this up a few weeks ago when Michelle suggested it as a blog topic. I took so long to just re-size & post the photos, ugh.
I should have used my iPhone because then they would have been up faster. But… it’s still all pretty relevant so it’s all good
These are items I’ve had in my closet for a pretty long time and use quite often. They’re not my “favorites” or “most fun” necessarily… They’re items I need mostly.
They’re key and can easily be paired with so many other items. Definitely must haves. I wear them all the time.
I think the theme for many of these would be the idea of simplicity with an edge.
Most of these are standard staples but each has a tiny bit something extra that attracted me to them and added a bit of “me” into it. Many I wear for both work and play
- S-leg Tights
- Black Heels
- Ribbon Tie Shorts
- Uniqlo Cotton Blazer
- White Ribbon Chiffon Blouse
- Cut-Out Cardigan
- Stripe maxi
- Camisoles
- Satchel

S-Leg Black Tights
These are my most worn tights. I probably wear them at least twice a week. They’re opaque black and very durable and quite washable. Because of this I often wear them to both work and out. And best feature? One leg has a bright red ribbon print at the ankle!
So they’re a little quirky and not 100% boring. And yes, people notice the ribbon all the time!
They’re from Shimamura, Tsubasa’s S-Leg line.
Black Studded Heels
Without a doubt the best go-to heels I own. Classic black, fit great, and comfortable thanks to some padded inserts. Like the tights, these have a little twist. They have gold studs in the back at the heel.
A little more fun than just the standard black heel. I wear these to work and out too. I like items with dual purpose. Boring enough for office attire but an added element to keep me interested. They’re from H&M.

Ribbon Tie Shorts
This pair of tan shorts became almost daily non-work wear for me this past spring and summer. I’m still wearing them at least once a week and plan to carry them into winter with tights! These are from H&M.
Knit Cardigan
This is a must since I get cold easily. I even wore it throughout summer. I would bring it in my bag for shopping indoors or eating at restaurants. It’s a beige knit. It has an oversized shape plus these “cut-outs” along the edge that I really really love.
It matches with nearly everything I have. I’ve even worn it to the office on my casual days too.

UNIQLO Blazer
I bought this my last day in Tokyo last year. On a whim. I already had a thick black blazer at home but this was cotton and I thought maybe I’d use it at the office. SO GLAD.
I wear this multiple times a week! It’s extremely comfortable, easily washable, and keeps its shape! I ended up often wearing it outside the office too. I love this blazer like a child!

White Blouse
Another often talked about “must have” in anyone’s closet. This is my version.
I got this blouse last winter and have worn it into the ground especially to work. Looks great with the black blazer and black heels. Since it’s now cold out again I’ll be wearing it even more so. Photo didn’t come out so good, white shirt on a white door in a dim closet, haha~

Maxi Dress
Oh this dress I’ve worn so much since last spring!! At one point this past summer I wore it almost daily. It’s really comfortable and extremely easy to just “throw on.” I’m 5′1″ so finding a maxi dress that didn’t drag on the ground was a god send.
I’ve worn it in this cold weather already with some thick tights and a duffel down coat and moccasins.

Satchel
I blogged about this bag back in May. It’s my most used bag now. I’m hardly ever without it especially for all day outings. The ability to transform it into a backpack is invaluable plus it goes with nearly everything.

Camisoles and Slips
The be all and end all of key items.
I own countless shapes, styles and colors of these items. I wear some version of camisole or slip daily.
The photo is of my long slips for dresses, but I have tanks and camis in a drawer separated by color. Black is my most used though and I own multiple of them.

I Scribble Notes Like a Crazed Person
Wednesday, October 26th, 2011 | 41 Comments

I was thinking today, with November less than a week away and “wintry mix”
in the forecast for this coming Saturday, I need to transition my closet from fall to winter.
I want to drill down to the best pieces I WANT to wear all the time, right now. Lately I have a lot of “guilt items” again. Change of season usually to blame.
I see them there hanging and feel bad for hardly ever wearing them so I stare at them thinking “I should try to work this in today…”
but then I don’t.
It’s a waste of time to even see them! So I’m going to weed them out. It’s hard when you still “like” the item. I won’t be donating or selling them though. I might grow tired of my current favs and they’ll be there ready to take over. Plus ready for warmer weather too. Well, in theory. Ok ok ok rambling.
I made a list to help me reorg for winter! I’m a list-a-phile.
If I can break it down into a list then a list it will be! They help me think things through.
While away (key!) from my closet, I did a category of things I’m dying to wear and another of things I feel guilty for never wearing but still live with the delusion I will. The guilt clothes get moved out into the storage closet. Sometimes though, I feel SO guilty and rethink it, I force myself to try on at least 3 outfits using the item should be tossing.
If I don’t love the looks it goes!
It’s so silly but clothes are MONEY in my head and not wearing them feels like wasting money. So much guilt.
But out of sight out of mind.
Next I took the favorites and broke them down into item types. The tops and bottoms all match beautifully.
Etc. How it should be!
Then I started breaking them into two categories of casual and non-casual (I wrote elegant
). It’s vague and only means anything to me really but it’s helpful for my goal.
I always feel so energized
when I do this with my clothes. I’ll definitely be pulling many items back out come spring. If I still feel not so great about any of them I’ll be making my way to the donation bin
.
